A business with 60 reviews at 4.7 stars beats a business with 3 reviews at 5 stars almost every time. Customers trust volume as much as they trust the score. Here is how Maltese businesses actually build that volume, without buying fake reviews or annoying customers into leaving.
Why reviews matter more in Malta than you might think
Malta is small enough that word of mouth travels fast, and Google reviews are the digital version of that same word of mouth. A new customer deciding between two similar businesses nearby will almost always check reviews first, especially for restaurants, clinics and trades where trust matters before the first visit.
The best moment to ask
The single biggest lever is timing. Ask right after a good experience, not days later by email. A waiter mentioning it at the table, a hairdresser saying it at checkout, or a plumber leaving a small card after a job all work better than a generic follow-up message sent a week on, when the moment has already faded.
What to actually say
Keep the ask short and specific. "If you enjoyed today, a quick Google review would really help us" works better than a vague "please review us." Giving people a direct link removes the friction of them having to search for your business themselves, and friction is the main reason people who intend to leave a review never do.
Responding to reviews, good and bad
Reply to every review, not just the bad ones. A short, genuine reply to a five-star review shows future customers that a real person is behind the page. For a negative review, stay calm, acknowledge the specific complaint, and offer to sort it outside the public thread. Never argue in the replies. Anyone reading it later is judging your response more than the original complaint.
What not to do
Do not buy reviews, do not ask staff or family to post fake ones, and do not offer discounts in exchange for a review. Google actively removes suspicious review patterns, and getting caught can suppress your whole profile. The slow, honest way is also the durable one.
How we help with this
Managing reviews properly takes a little time every week: replying, flagging anything that breaks Google's policies, and building simple habits like the ask-at-the-right-moment approach above. Our Google Marketing packages include review management from the Local Leader tier upward. See the Google Marketing page for details, or book a free consultation and we will look at your current profile together.
